First of all, how in the hell is it even possible to "blow a piston ring" (as the mechanic put it to me)? For those of you who don't know, I have a 2012 Audi A5 that is sick at the moment. Last Monday, she let go and I took her to Audi to get fixed. Long story short, they ran the codes on my ECU and saw that I had tried out an APR tune. The "TD1'd" it and voided my power train warranty. Anyway, I have it at a very reputable VAG shop in the local area and they finally got the head off of it. The tech calls me up just now and tell me that I have TWO blown rings on my 2.0. Two. How is this possible? I have heard of this happening on old junker-ass cars and trucks that sit in fields for years, but my car has 27000 miles and is driven every day. Anyone ever heard of this? What causes this?

Thanks, peeps.

Not warming it up properly. Not running the correct oil. Beating the shit out of it all the time, every time. etc etc.

Could also be a manufacture defect. Be glad it's just rings. Were the liners scored?

German luxury cars aren't immune to factory defects or things you expect to happen to "old junker-ass cars and trucks that sit in fields for years". How long did you run that tune?

My car sits in a heated garage, I DON'T beat the shit out of it and I use the recommended oil on the engine. Never over-heated, never made any funny noises, just quite literally "let go" right in the middle of rush hour traffic going 5 mph. I am pretty sure that the liners aren't scored, so that's nice. How much does a ring job cost, usually?

Boost in > rings out

I'm no super mechanic but I think the tune could have messed up your air:fuel ratio (either too rich or lean) which could have burnt the rings.

Chalk it up to manufacture defect. Could also be caused by excessive knocking. Did you run cheap fuel in it with the map?

A ring job isn't that much work (assuming the head is off as you said). Drop oil pan, undo conrod bolts, slide out pistons and conrods. Fit new rings, and refit everything. I don't know about your car specifically, though. It's an audi, so you probably have to lift the engine out through your guage cluster or something in order to get to the oil pan. It probably doesn't even have an oil pan anymore. It just transports the oil to some kind of alternate universe and back.

Did APR offer any kind of warranty with their tune? Looks like they let it run too lean.

Oh Audi must take engineering tips from Mazda

Get pictures. I'm curious what they mean by blown rings. I'd believe blown ring lands, blown rings would be hard to accomplish.

That's what I'm saying... I find it hard to believe that the rings are toast. I am going to go look at it on Monday and check it out. This is all very bizarre.

I would definitely ask them to define a "blown ring".

i just had my pistons replaced in my 2014 audi A5 and the problem was the gap clearance on the bottom ring was too small. blew out the 1st cylinder. no scoring on the block. there is an issue with the piston ring placement. there are new pistons that fix this issue. i shelled out money as well. but now i know i will not have the issue no more.

my piston head cracked and parts fell into the oil pan. Audi knows about this. look up the 2008-2012 pistons issue. they were replacing the pistons left and right on those years.
